little red riding hood inspired Barbie dress and cape crochet pattern

This look was requested by my oldest daughter, who was wanting to buy Cerise Hood from the Ever After High collection. I thought it was a perfect time for me to chime in and offer to create a Little Red Riding Hood inspired outfit that would transform one of her existing dolls into what she wanted. I think it turned out great! I have a thing for red hooded cloaks (are just such a beautiful symbol of fairytales for me), I may have to make a full length one for my own doll...

Created by paperdollmom, Copyright 2014

Materials for the dress and basket: Patons Kroy Sock Yarn (one color will do, but I used a tan and a multicolor yarn that complimented the tan) and a size 2 hook

materials for the hooded cloak: Red Heart Shimmer Yarn in red and a size 00 hook, a button is optional

DRESS

-in the multicolor sock yarn, chain 39 sts, DC in second from the hook

-DC across the rest of the row, chain 2 and turn

-DC across for 3 more rows, a total of 4 rows (making sure to chain 2 and turn at the end of each row)

-next row, DC in the first 6 sts, chain 6, skip the next 6 sts and DC in the 7th, DC in the next 13 sts, chain 6, skip the next 6 sts, DC in the last 6 sts of the row

-chain 1, turn, sc across the row

-slip stitch down the back of the top to close it

-once at the bottom of the top, SC the beginning of the ruffle in a round by SC in the first stitch, chain 3, SC in the next 2 sts, chain 3, SC in the next 2 stst....complete the pattern around

-Chain 2, DC in each of the sts around you just made, slip stitch the last DC to the first

-change your yarn color to the tan color if you are using 2 colors, chain 2

-continue to DC in rounds (remembering to chain 2 in the beginning and slip stitch the first and last together) for 10 more rows

-finish off

-if you want a lacey appearance to the top of the dress like I have, you can now also take the tan yarn and SC into a stitch on the back of the dress on the top most row, now chain 3, skip the next stitch, SC in the second stitch, chain 3, skip the next stitch, SC in the second stitch....continue this pattern across the top of the dress, then slip stitch the last chain 3 into the first SC, finish off

BASKET

-in the multicolor yarn, chain 6, DC in the second chain from the hook

-continue to DC across the row for a total of 5 rows (making sure to chain 2 and turn at the end of each row)

-now begin to DC around the  outside of the entire rectangle you just crocheted, slip stitch the last DC to the first DC of the round, chain 2

-DC around for 3 more rounds (will be a total of 4 rounds), making sure to chain 2 at the beginning of each row, and slip stitch the last DC of the row to the first DC of the row

-chain 1, SC around, then slip stitch the last SC to the first SC

-chain 2, DC in the first 6 sts, chain 2, turn

-next row combine 2 DC into 1, 3 times, chain 2, turn

-now DC across the row of 3 sts for a total of 7 rows, making sure to chain 2 and turn at the end of each row

-now increase a stitch 3 times

-cut your yarn long enough to stitch the side of the handle to the basket

-finish off

HOODED CLOAK

Hood

-chain 40, DC in 2nd from the hook and DC across the row

-chain 2, turn

-complete 4 more rows (5 total rows) of DC across (remember to chain 2 and turn at the end of each row

-DC across next row by decreasing 1 stitch 5 times in the middle of the row, chain 2, turn

-cut yarn with plenty of length and stitch closed the back of the hood

 Cape

-now crochet SC across the bottom of the hood

-optional, if you want the cloak to be able to close with a button, now is where you should chain enough to wrap around your chosen button, then turn and SC in the last stitch you made (the actual last SC you made in the previous row); if you do not want a button on your cloak then simply chain 1 and turn, then SC in the first stitch

-SC in the next 5 sts, then chain 3, then SC in the next stitch; continue the pattern across the row of chain 3 in stitch, then SC in the next, until you reach the last 6 sts of the row- SC in those last 6 stitches

-chain 2, turn, DC across the row

-continue to DC across in rows for 11 more rows (a total of 12 rows of DC sts), remembering to chain 2 and turn at the end of each row

-finish off

-now you can attach your button on the opposite side of the hood from where you made your loop; if you have chosen not to add a button, you can braid a couple of long pieces of yarn and attach one braid to each side of the hood to use to tie the cloak closed

*optional, I was not pleased with the back of the hood trying to make it extra roomy in the front, so I pinched the back of the hood to see how it looked best, and used a strand of yarn to stitch the fold in the back of the hood so it set more nicely on the back of the doll's head
