free crochet scarf pattern: puffed rows

Created by paperdollmom, Copyright 2015

Materials needed: Red Heart Yarn (or something similar) and an I hook

Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert hook into desired stitch, pull a yarn loop through so that you now have 3 loops on your hook. Repeat this 3 more times, until you have 9 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 9 loops.

-Chain 168, DC in the 4th chain from the hook and across, chain 3, turn
-*DC in first stitch, Puff Stitch in next (repeat across, ending in a DC stitch). Chain 3, turn
-DC across, chain 3, turn
-Repeat row *, chain 3, turn
-You will be alternating rows of just DC across, and a row of DC and Puff Stitch (as explained in *), until you have 9 complete rows. The first and last will be rows of just DC across.
-Finish off.

*This pattern will create a scarf around 5 inches wide and approximately 48 inches long. You can easily adjust these dimensions by adding or leaving off rows, or adding or leaving off chains in the first step. It is important to note that the number of DC stitches across each row should be an odd number to allow for the alternate puff stitches and a DC at the end of each row.

  2. I'm not sure if I have this right. On row three do I need to ch 3 and skip one or not? And my dc row between puff rows looks like I did dc ch 1 dc across. The stitches don't look close together like yours. I'm using Caron One Pound and an H hook. Thanks!

    1. The entire scarf is basically alternating rows. First is just DC across, the second row is the puff stitch across, the third row is just DC across. The chain 3 is just reminding to chain 3 at the end of the row before turning. Hope that helps. I am not entirely sure I am answering your question though? If not, please let me know, and describe it a bit more to see if I can help better. I don't know why yours would look like a DC CH1 across if you are not adding that chain between each DC. The hook size and yarn should not matter....it just may require a different number of the initial chains, or a differe t number of rows.

    2. I guess I should clarify that the puff stitched rows are actually a DC in one stitch, puff in the next stitch- across the row.

    3. I tried to word it a bit better in the pattern, hopefully that helps!

  3. How many yards of yarn? These types of stitches tend to be a "yarn hog" so that would be helpful to know. Thanks.

    1. I didn't find it to be that much of a yarn hog. I don't believe I went over a skein of yarn, but then again, it is a shorter scarf, as I was testing out a few things to make a scarf for a charity that had a length restriction. It's been a long while since I created this, so I don't remember more specifics. I do have another scarf pattern on my blog that you may prefer if you find this one to be too much of a yarn hog.
